Our History

Early City Days:

Established in 1947, in the Culwulla Chambers, on Castlereagh Street, Sydney, A man by the name of Jack Curry, began importing Millinery Supplies, to service some of Sydney’s leading Hat and Dress makers. In 1950, he formed J T Curry and Co, and began specializing in Ribbons, leaving his friend, Muir Gibb, to remain dealing in other millinery supplies (Such as Feathers, shapes, etc).
The two businesses ran side by side for 25 years, and Every day, at 5pm on the Dot, both Jack and Muir would enjoy a nice cold Beer at the local Pub.

The Next Generation:

By 1979, The company had already moved to the famous Dymocks Building, on George Street, Sydney. During these early days, all the Curry children were required to work in the family business in some capacity. David was the first to take on Full time employment, and a few years later, his friend Brett Patterson came on board. Some new faces bought new ideas and boy…. Change was coming!

The Move V1:

In 1984, after seeing his company grow and change, Jack Curry abruptly retired. At 10am one morning, he got out of his seat, and walked out for the last time.
By 1986, David decide change was needed, and took the company in a new direction. David’s plan was to introduce Manufacturing into the company’s repertoire, which meant, they needed more space than the current City location could provide. On the first day of July, 1986, J T Curry and Co began trading at 319-325 Trafalgar Street, Petersham, and our first Ribbon Slitting Machine officially came into use.
During this time, John Curry (Jacks Eldest) and Graham Curry (the youngest of the Curry boys), could be found working at the Petersham factory. Graham can still be found in the office on the right days, looking after J T Curry Distributing Co.

Turning 50:

In 1997 J T Curry and Co turned 50! Now an established name in the Gift wrapping, haberdashery and printing industries, every effort from the team was taken, to Celebrate this milestone. This included a Presentation from one of the major suppliers “Selectus Ltd” and a personalized Bottle of Vat 24 Dry red from Stiens Wines of Mudgee, with Jack Curry’s photo gracing the label!

Moving Forward:

During the time at Petersham, major change was occuring world wide! One of which, that effected David, Graham and the team, was the change from Acetate to Polyester Satins. This called for the introduction of the newest machine. An Ultrasonic cutting machine from Italy - that is still used to this day!
Another major introduction during this time, was the introduction on the trading name that many of our loyal customers have come to know…. Enter CURRY RIBBONS!!!!!!

The Move V2:

As the business grew, space constraints again became an issue and late 2013, Curry Ribbons made the move to the current premises, 2/79 Barton Street, Katoomba. This site houses 6 heat cutting machines, 2 printing machines and the Ultrasonic cutting machine. The warehouse mezzanine also holds tens of thousands of rolls of precut ribbons, while the downstairs stockholding consists of fabric satins ready for the Manufacturing process. The move to Katoomba also saw the retirement of long term employee, Brett Patterson. An integral part of the Curry Ribbons business for 30 years!

Gen 3 and Beyond:

In early 2022, David approached his Daughter Claire, and her Husband Peter, with the idea of taking over the family business. In August 2022, after 10 years in the Automotive industry, Peter came into the business full time, with Claire finishing up as a Registered Nurse in October, to work part time, while also looking after their 2 daughters, Georgia (4) and Isabelle (1). And maybe in a few years become Generation 4….Only time will tell!
